Where to Launch Model Rockets

So you've finally gotten that new model rocket kit and it's built and ready for launching. Now where are you going to launch this new rocket? It's important to have a location picked out that you know will be safe to launch rockets. Here are a few places that are always good to check out when it comes to launching your rocket.

  • Parks- Ideally you should be able to head down to your local park and be able to launch some model rockets. In most cases you can do this, however, it is recommended you check with the park rules beforehand. Make sure to avoid any dry or dead grass, because model rocket engines do have the ability to light dry brush on fire. If you do launch in a park make sure to notify others in the area what you will be doing. They may feel safer watching from a distance.
  • School Fields - Just about every school has a field that is wide open and away from trees and buildings. Make sure to get permission from the school before launching any model rocket. Sometimes you may run into a school that is worried about being held liable for any injuries. This may result in the school asking you not to launch the rockets.
  • Private Farms - This is the best spot to launch your Estes model rockets. Again make sure to get permission from the land owner before launching any rockets. Farms are excellent because it is private property and the soil is often moist. This makes launching rockets much more safe for everyone. Before launching tell the land owner how rockets differ from fireworks and hand them a copy of the Model Rocketry Safety Code, which all model rocket fliers abide to.

Joining a rocketry group is a sure way to find a location to launch rockets. The problem is there may not be a club in your area and sometimes these clubs require a fee. If you just want a day of some relaxing rocket launches then try checking out one of the locations listed above. Just make sure to get permission before any rocket is launched.
