Model Rocket Engine Safety
No matter your skill level, it is always important to make sure you take all safety guidelines into consideration when launching model rockets. Model rocket motors are not toys and should be treated with caution. One of the most dangerous parts of a model rocket is the rocket motor, with this in mind, take the time to see some steps you can take to be safe.
The most important rule is to only use model rocket engines for your model rockets. Don't ignite rocket engines unless they are safely, secured within a model rocket. Outside of a model rocket tube the engines can be very unpredictable. Only ignite rocket engines when they are pointing straight up and are away from power lines, trees, and homes.
Another important rule of thumb is to make sure the area you are launching from is clear of dead debris. This means no launching model rockets on grass that is dead or near brush that is dried out. Also never launch model rockets straight from the ground, it is important to always launch from a blast pad. The blast pad reflects the heat of the model rocket engine making it safe to launch in many more locations. Make sure to use a launch rod along with this blast pad, this will insure the rocket flies straight up, rather than at an unsafe angle.
Always inspect your engines once you pull them out of the pack. Look to make sure the casing and the nozzle have no defects or even cracks. If the rocket engines appear to be defective immediately dispose of them, don't risk hurting yourself or your belongings by igniting the rocket engine.
Model rocketry is a safe and fun activity, when the guidelines are followed correctly. Use your head and make proper decisions before launching any model rockets. Remember to launch rockets in open areas, away from tress, power lines, and homes. When the rules are broken, others are put into danger.
