Estes 2190 Cosmos Mariner Model Rocket Kit Description:
The Estes Cosmos Mariner, looking very similar to the existing Space
Shuttle, was an X Prize suborbital concept by Lone Star Space Access.
This rocket plane was thought to be a leading contender for the Ansari
X PRIZE but unfortunately, the concept never reached the prototype
phase. The design objective was to power the glider/rocket with an air
breathing jet propulsion system for take-off and then switch to rocket
propulsion for its continued climb to the 100 km goal.
The ingenious designers at Estes reviewed the concept drawings and were
able to capture enough information to create this replica. This scale
model of the Cosmos Mariner has many interesting design features that
create a masterful reproduction of the original design. In addition to
laser cut balsa parts, this glider/rocket also features a clear molded
top and bottom glider shell for added realism and awesome glider
flights. Assembly of this Skill Level 2 kit requires some experience
with scale model rockets. In terms of size, this high-flying model is
18 inches (45.8 cm) long and has a wing span of 13.5 inches (34.3 cm).
When powered with a D engine, this unique concept rocket plane can
reach altitudes of 250 feet (76 m) and then glide to the ground in a
realistic manner while the power pod floats back to earth on a 18 inch
(46 cm) preassembled parachute.
Assembly required. Glue, launch supplies and Estes engines are required
- sold separately. Requires a 3/16 inch (5 mm) Maxi Launch Rod - sold
separately. Recommended for ages 10 and up with adult supervision for
those under 12.
